Update from Cajamarca

(WES) Yesterday I went back to Yanacocha for a second visit - Newmont has been more cooperative than I expected - yesterday I was given my own guide and taken around and aloud to ask questions about the process. I also submitted a proposal to release data for my analysis which I wrote over the weekend and expect to hear from them in the next couple of days.

Yesterday Laura went to the Complejo Belen - a religous complex, and also to the Cuarto de Rescate (the room where Inca emperor Atahualpa was imprisoned by Pizarro). I will post some new pics - see the link on the right as alwaysfor pictures

After staying moving for one night to a hotel in the city center - which was a beuatiful old Spanish colonial structure and a spacious room, but right over the Plaza de Armas so it was very loud -- we moved back to the small family run place .5 mile away from the center. During the day we walk back and forth to the center, but take a cab (which there are a million of!) back at night for 2.5 soles - about 80 cents.

The best food weve had in Cajamarca are probably the soups - Caldo Verde (green heb soup with shredded chicken), humintas (like Mexican tamales). There is a lot of greasy meat and fries which are hard to avoid. Other culinary hightlights are Ocupa arequipena (potato dish covered with a delicious creme sauce), holland - style ice cream. We drink a lot of mate de coca - a common hot tea here kind of like a green tea.

Laura found the fanciest hair salon in town and is getting her haircut while i blog.

There apparently will be a strike blocked the national highways tomorrow and Thursday. We are looking for more information, but temporarily delaying our passage to Trujillo until it passes. So Friday at the earliest we will leave for Trujillo.

Estamos todavia in Cajamarca. Wes esta solicitando datos de la mina y ha ido dos veces. Laura he visitado sitios touristicas in Cajamarca y ha conversado con unos Cajamarquinos sobre la vida aqui.

Debido de huegla, las autopista este bloqueado en los dos dias que vienen - entonces esparamos a ir a Trujillo hasta puedamos pasar libre.

Ademas, todos esta bien!
